This album is split into two halves: brutal dissonant melancholic black metal (the odd-numbered tracks), and melancholic dungeon synth (the even-numbered tracks). I started this album in 2018 when I quickly wrote some riff ideas on a couple different occasions. The riffs sat for a while until I decided to finish the album in 2019.

Despite being recorded with distortion, all of the guitars were written on my electric guitar while it was unplugged, so it basically acted like an acoustic guitar, which affected the songwriting. There's no tremolo picking, no palm mutes, and literally every riff has ringing notes that give the songs a dreamy quality (and two songs were finger-picked). The drumming, however, is relentless brutality with lots of blast beats, double kick, and some wild fills. For the vocals, I usually record a couple lines at a time and take drinks of water in between, but this time I recorded a whole song without stopping and left spaces in the lyrics where I could take a drink. The dungeon synth songs are simple and sad-sounding, and I occasionally used a delay pedal with my keyboard.

This album also has a raw and minimalistic feeling: the black metal songs only have drums/guitars/vocals with no tempo changes during a song and no guitar harmonies or extra layers, and the dungeon synth songs use only one keyboard track with no extra layers or post-effects. All instruments and vocals were recorded in a full take with no overdubs, punch-ins, timing manipulation, quantization, copy/paste, etc., and no triggers or samples were used on the drums.

Je ne sais pas exactement comment traduire le titre Flying Ointment. Ma première hypothèse, c'est "Pommade qui donne la faculté de voler" et elle fait sens parce que le synthé a un rôle plus important ici et, malgré quelques phases cauchemardesques, les ambiances sont mystiques et libératrices. Mais, sachant que Old Nick prend un malin plaisir à rendre ce remède inaccessible, caché derrière un raw black metal technique (practitioner arrache tout !), il s'agit peut-être d'une "Pommade volante"...
